Mixing and mastering are the final, critical stages of music production where the artistic vision meets technical reality. While recording captures the performance, mixing is the process of balancing every individual element—vocals, drums, guitars, and synths—to create a cohesive sonic landscape. It is about carving out space for every instrument, ensuring clarity, and adding the emotional depth that defines a professional record.

Mastering is the final polish. It is the bridge between the mix and the listener, ensuring that the track meets industry loudness standards while maintaining dynamic range. At Yahasehonoperations, we approach this process with surgical precision, using treated bass traps and near-field studio monitors to identify and correct problematic frequencies that often go unnoticed in home studios. Our goal is to provide a consistent, competitive sound that holds its own on streaming platforms and physical media alike.

Our Sonic Workflow

01

Session Analysis

We begin by reviewing your multitracks and reference tracks to understand the desired mood, genre conventions, and the emotional arc of the song.

02

Balance & EQ

Establishing the primary balance and using subtractive EQ to remove mud and clashes, ensuring every element has its own frequency pocket.

03

Dynamic Control

Applying compression and saturation to glue the mix together, managing peaks, and enhancing the punch and sustain of the performance.

04

Final Mastering

The final stage involving stereo enhancement, limiting to target loudness, and final quality checks for phase coherence and translation.

Who Is This Service For?

Our mixing and mastering services are designed for a diverse range of audio creators. Independent musicians who have recorded their tracks in home studios often find that their mixes lack the "depth" or "punch" of commercial releases; we provide the professional environment to bridge that gap. For bands who have tracked at our Adelaide studio, we offer a seamless transition from recording to the final master.

Additionally, we work with podcasters and voice-over artists who require a high degree of vocal clarity and consistency. Whether you are producing a cinematic soundtrack, a high-energy pop track, or a spoken-word series, the technical requirements for a "clean" sound remain the same: controlled low-end, balanced mids, and a smooth high-frequency response.

How the Work is Conducted

The process starts with a digital handover of your files. We prefer working with high-resolution WAV or AIFF files to maintain maximum fidelity. Once the files are ingested, our engineers—including Samuel Jones and Jack Roberts—perform a detailed audit of the tracks. We then create a "first pass" mix, focusing on the core balance and spatial placement.

Communication is key during this phase. You will receive a version of the track for review, and we will implement adjustments based on your feedback. We believe in a collaborative approach where the engineer's technical expertise supports the artist's creative intent. Once the mix is approved, it moves to the mastering stage, where the final sonic signature is applied and the track is prepared for distribution.

Client Preparation: What to Provide

To ensure the most efficient workflow and avoid additional costs, we ask clients to prepare their sessions according to specific guidelines. First, ensure all tracks are consolidated and start at the exact same timestamp (zero point). This prevents alignment issues when importing files into our DAW.

Each track should be clearly labelled (e.g., "Kick_In", "Lead_Vocal_Main", "Guitar_L"). Please remove any "baked-in" effects that you are unsure about, as it is easier for us to add a professional reverb or delay than to remove a poor-quality one. We highly recommend providing 2-3 reference tracks from established artists that represent the sonic direction you want to achieve. For more details on technical requirements, please visit our guide on audio formats.

Deliverables: What You Receive

Upon completion and final payment, you will receive a comprehensive delivery package. This includes the final Master file in high-resolution WAV (usually 24-bit/44.1kHz or higher) and a high-quality MP3 version for quick sharing and review. We ensure that the loudness levels are optimized for the target platform, whether it be Spotify, Apple Music, or broadcast television.

Furthermore, we provide the "Stems" of the mix. Stems are grouped versions of your song (e.g., all drums as one file, all vocals as another). These are invaluable for future remixes, live performances, or synchronization in film and television, where a producer might need to lower the vocals to make room for dialogue.

Timelines and Turnaround

The timeframe for mixing and mastering depends on the complexity of the project and the number of tracks involved. A standard single-track mix and master typically takes 5 to 10 business days for the first version. Mastering-only projects are generally completed faster, often within 3 to 5 business days.

We operate on a queue system to ensure every project receives the necessary attention. If you have a strict release deadline, please inform us during the booking process. Please note that the turnaround time is extended if multiple rounds of revisions are requested, as each change requires a fresh set of ears and a re-evaluation of the overall balance.

What Is Not Included

It is important to clarify that mixing and mastering are post-production services. This does not include "fixing" poor recordings. While we can use advanced tools to reduce some noise or correct minor pitch issues, we cannot recreate a performance or fix severe clipping (digital distortion) that occurred during the recording stage.

Arrangement changes—such as moving a chorus or deleting a bridge—are not part of the mixing process. These decisions must be finalised before the mixing phase begins. Any requests for structural changes to the song will be treated as a new project or billed as additional production hours. Please refer to our Terms and Conditions for more on scope of work.

Pricing and GST Calculation

Our pricing is transparent and designed for both independent artists and professional agencies. For the Mixing & Mastering service, we charge per track. The price listed includes the full mixing process and the final master.

In accordance with Australian tax law, all prices are subject to Goods and Services Tax (GST) at a rate of 10%. When you see a price of $400 AUD, this is the total amount inclusive of GST. For B2B clients who are registered for GST, the ex-GST price is provided for accounting purposes. The GST is calculated by dividing the total price by 11.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between mixing and mastering?

Mixing is the process of blending individual tracks (vocals, drums, etc.) into a single stereo file. It focuses on balance, clarity, and effect application. Mastering is the final step where that single stereo file is polished, balanced in volume, and optimised for different playback systems to ensure it sounds professional everywhere.

How many revisions are included in the price?

We include up to 3 rounds of revisions per track. This allows us to fine-tune the balance based on your feedback. Revisions beyond this limit may incur additional charges based on the time required to implement the changes.

Do I own the rights to the final master?

Yes. Full rights to the final master are transferred to the client upon 100% payment of the invoice. We do not claim any ownership of your intellectual property, although we may request permission to list the track in our portfolio.

Can you master a track that was mixed elsewhere?

Absolutely. We provide standalone mastering services for clients who are happy with their mix but need a professional engineer to handle the final loudness, tonal balance, and technical delivery requirements.
